Vietnam - An Introduction (Continued)
Trung Trac and Trung Nhi (Hai Ba Trung)
The nation was dominated by the Chinese from the year 207 B.C. to 40 A.D.
until a Vietnamese woman named Trung Trac and her sister, Trung Nhi,
brought a brief end to northern domination. After on the throne
for only three years, Trung Trac then lost the war and the nation was dominated again
for the next five centuries from the year 43 to 543 A.D.
Vietnam regained independence from 544 to 602 and afterwards fought intermittently
against Chinese invasion. French ruled Vietnam as a colony for some 80 years from the
2nd half of the 19th century till 1954.
The country was then divided into North Vietnam and South Vietnam in 1954
with the American supporting the South and the Soviet Union backing the
North. Vietnam was engaging in a devastating civil war for more than
20 years with millions of casualty. The country was finally reunified in
1975.
Population
Vietnamese people belong to South Asian species whose statures are
small but quick-minded and hard working. Vietnam's population is about
85 millions (2006 est.) with some 60 ethnic groups, among which the
majority people is the Viet (or Kinh). The average population density is
200 people per km2 with 20% of the population live in urban areas.
Geography
Vietnam can be seen as Asia's balcony looking out on the Pacific
Ocean. The country has the total area of 330,000 km2, from the 8th to the
23th parallel (north of the equator), with a coastline of 3,200 km.
Vietnam is a tropical country with humid and monsoon seasons. The
country has abundant natural resources: oil, gas, forest, mineral, fertile
land, waterway, etc.
Most of Vietnam's forests are in the South West and North West with 19 millions ha of
forest occupy two-thirds of the total area. For many years of destruction by wars, the
natural forest is now about 9.3 million ha with 525 million m3 of wood. Vietnam's
forests preserve a great number of animals and plants: 7,000 species of plant, 300 species
of mammal, more than 700 species of bird and about 200 species of reptile.
